Health Reasons to Support Veganism |
|
Doctors/Nutritionists Who Promote A Vegan/Vegetarian Diet
The following are Physicians (there are many others, this is just a few) who, they themselves are vegetarian/vegan and advocate such a diet to prevent or reverse numerous chronic and degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, crohn's disease, arthritis and osteoporosis. It has been shown that a vegan/vegetarian diet can also lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and body fat, ease PMS and menopause, ease the symptoms of aids.....and extend life. Check out their websites to read indepth articles about their research and the role that diet plays in our our overall health.....or read one of the many books listed here.
- Charles Attwood, M.D. Vegan, length of time unknown. World-famous pediatric physician and activist. As a result of his work the 1996 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans admitted for the first time that a vegetarian diet could be healthy. You can check out articles by Dr. Attwood at Vegsource
- Neal Barnard, M.D. Vegan since the 80's
Founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in 1985. Visit their website at: PCRM , which promotes vegan diets and has about 5000 doctors as members. He wrote "Dr. Neal Barnard's Program For Reversing Diabetes" and "Eat Right, Live Longer". For more information go to http://Neal Barnard. View Dr. Barnard at: A Cure For Diabetes Through Veganism
- Dumrong Chiewsilp, M.D.
Based on a study, recommends that AIDS patients can live longer, healthier lives on a vegetarian diet.
"Following recommendations for longer life in AIDS are in order: (1) Abstinence of meats and their products, cowmilk, eggs, meats, eggs, dairy products, fermented fishes and sea foods as well as low nutrient-dense foods, such as sugar, sweets and fatty foods."

- Hans Diehl, Dr. Hsc.
Since the late 80's has promoted vegetarian/vegan diets in large community medicine projects where 500 to 3000 people enroll in a 40-hour educational program designed to facilitate the evolution of a healthier culture within the culture-at-large.
"What we need to recognize is that in today’s world our health is not so much determined by the intellect of doctors, by their training, or by the size or sophistication of hospitals. Instead, it is estimated that 70% of our diseases are related to lifestyle choices. Good health then is largely the result of what we are willing to do for ourselves and how we choose to live, especially in the areas of eating, drinking, smoking and exercise." - Dean Ornish, M.D. He is president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute. Assumed to be mostly vegan since the mid-80's. Ornish was the first researcher to successfully reverse heart disease in a study. The primary component of his treatment was a low-fat vegetarian diet. source. You can check out articles by Dr. Ornish at: Web MD and also on You Tube at: How To Reverse Heart Disease.
- Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Website is Heartattack Proof. Author of "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" This is an excert from his website:
Twenty-three years ago, while chairman of the Cleveland Clinic's Breast Cancer Task Force, general surgeon Caldwell B. Esseistyn, Jr., M.D., grew disappointed in the way he and his colleagues were treating cancer and heart disease. Relying on pills and procedures despite their side effects and risks, Dr. Esselstyn says he and his peers were doing "nothing to prevent disease in the next unsuspecting victim." This was particularly frustrating given that research studies had already suggested an obvious culprit. The fatty American diet was, in all likelihood, responsible for heart disease and many Western cancers, which are infrequently seen in parts of the world where much less fat is consumed. Targeting heart disease, Dr. Esselstyn's experiment started at home. He and his wife adopted a plant-based diet, cutting out oil, meat, fish, fowl and dairy.
You can check out Dr. Esselstyn on You Tube at:
No More Heart Attacks.....Ever.
- Dr. T. Colin Campbell. The author of "The China Study", the longest study ever conducted between health and food, discusses the hazards of an animal based diet.
He was also Senior Science Advisor during the formative years of the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund. AICR awarded him the 1998 Lifetime Achievement Award in Cancer Research. You can check out articles by Dr. Campbell at Veg Source. The following is an exerpt from "Why China Holds The Key To Your Health":
Blood cholesterol levels can be reduced by reducing dietary animal protein and exchanging it for dietary plant protein. Some of the plant proteins, particularly soy, have an impressive ability to reduce blood cholesterol. I really believe that dietary protein both the kind and the amount is more significant as far as cholesterol levels are concerned than is saturated fat.
I can understand why some of you may not want to consider that animal protein creates the same problems as excess fat intake, but it turns out that animal protein has many undesirable health effects. Whether it is the immune system, various enzyme systems, the uptake of carcinogens into the cells, or hormonal activities, animal protein generally only causes mischief. Check out Dr. T. Colin Campbell on You Tube at: Clip from "A Delicate Balance"
- Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, (February 26, 1852 - December 14, 1943) was a medical doctor in Battle Creek, Michigan. He ran a popular and often groundbreaking sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas and exercise. Today John Kellogg is best known for the invention of the Corn Flake, which spawned the breakfast cereal industry and revolutionized how people eat in the mornings Kellogg considered the colon central to good health. He lectured on the theory of "autointoxication", a self-poisoning caused by the too-slow breakdown of food in the intestines and colon. He preached a vegetarian diet, exercise, and frequent bowel movements. "A housebroken colon is a damaged colon," he warned.
- Michael Klaper, M.D. is a staunch advocate of the vegan diet and lifestyle. He is director of the Institute of Nutritional Education and Research. Author of "Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple". In 2005, he (who specializes in vegan nutrition), published the preliminary results of the Vegan Health Study, which followed over 900 vegans through questionnaires, as well as testing blood and urine samples of some of the participants. The results of the study were positive, suggesting that a properly balanced, vegan diet, based on whole foods and with special attention to the supplements discussed here, can offer many health benefits. Klaper’s list of benefits includes relief from, or even prevention of, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, as well as some kidney disorders, immune-inflammatory diseases, toxin exposure, gastrointestinal diseases and eye disorders.
Dr. Klaper has shown that a low-fat vegan diet can, remarkably, reverse heart disease. Not just slow it down, or halt progression, but actually encourage your body to heal the damage, and return to a healthier state.
Klaper also discovered that certain cancers have been shown to appear less in vegans than in non-vegans. The chances of developing prostate cancer are probably lower in vegans than in those who eat the typical omnivorous diet, “due to the reduced intake of meat and dairy products, and the increased intake of protective phytochemicals” – meaning eat your vegetables and fruits, says Klaper. Get plenty of fiber to help prevent colorectal cancers. Please read the entire article at: Friends of Animals.

Was The Human Body Meant To Digest Meat?
What are Intestinal Parasites?
Fruit and vegetables slide though the intestines in a few days. Meat can stay in the intestines for several weeks! Fruit and vegetables with water provide fiber to keep feces loose. Meat can cause constipation, and eating large amounts of meat can cause lumps to be stuck on the intestinal wall and remain partly digested for a long time. In the average American, there is one pound of unmoving meat stuck in the colon! This allegedly contributes to colon cancer, makes one feel bloated, and generally disrupts the natural workings of the colon. Feces rot, stink and stick particularly to damaged parts of the intestine. The decay of dead flesh can be passed to the intestinal wall.
Our total intestinal length is about 20-25 feet, about four times our body length, which is what it is for vegetarian animals. That's good for plant-fruit-vegetable digestion but not good for meat digestion.
More naturally carnivorous animals have digestive tracts that are shorter, so the meat can be digested and removed before it can do any damage.
Meat will putrefy more easily in such a long digestive tract. Meat decaying in our intestine including the colon, or large intestine, is cause for constipation, diverticulitis, and cancer.
The longer intestines of herbivores allow the body more time to break down fiber and absorb the nutrients from a plant-based diet. The long human intestinal tract actually makes it dangerous for people to eat meat. The bacteria in meat have extra time to multiply during the long trip through the digestive system, and meat actually begins to rot while it makes its way through the intestines. Many studies have also shown that meat can cause colon cancer in humans.
Studies have shown that even when fed 200 times the amount of animal fat and cholesterol that the average human consumes each day, carnivores do not develop the hardening of the arteries that leads to heart disease and strokes in humans. Indeed, researchers have found that it is impossible for carnivores to develop hardening of the arteries, no matter how much animal fat they consume.
Carnivores are capable of metabolizing all the fat and cholesterol in meat, but humans are a different story: Our bodies were not designed to process animal flesh, so all the excess fat and cholesterol from a meat-based diet makes us sick.
Maintaining a vegan or vegetarian diet greatly reduces your risk of cancer by ensure intestinal health and helping to boost the immune system in prevention and helping to overcoming cancer. Meat eating can also contribute to an increased population of internal parasites! Although there is not one specific cause of human parasites, there are factors that can contribute to an increased colony of parasites in the human body, such as infrequent bowel movements, sluggish detoxification, bad diet, high sugar diets, high fat diets and meat consumption which can ferment inside our long intestine, leading to the perfect conditions for parasites to thrive.
***There are three herbs that can rid you of over 100 types of parasites: Black Walnut, Wormwood and Cloves. Black walnut Hull and Wormwood kill adults and developmental stages of at least 100 parasites. Cloves kill the eggs. Only if you use them together will you rid yourself of parasites.
Check out my products page for Mother Nature where you can purchase "Wormwood Combination" that contains all three herbs needed to get rid of parasites. You will also find a selection of bowel cleanes at Mother Nature at well.
Steps to Keeping Your Intestines Healthy:
- Eliminate meat from your diet! (enough said!)
- Eating more fiber. Fiber keeps everything moving through your digestive tract at a faster rate. This helps your body eliminate toxins (giving your liver less work to do) and unwanted bacteria a lot more regular so they don’t start causing problems. It also keeps plaque from building up on the intestinal walls.
Plaque stops your body absorbing nutrients from your food, and is home for bacteria and parasites.
- Include Probiotics - Probiotics also help your intestines digest food, and will keep your intestines clean so you can absorb the nutrients from your food.
Drinking a fermented drink called Kefir. Kefir is a cultured, enzyme-rich food filled with friendly micro-organisms that help balance your "inner ecosystem." It supplies complete protein, essential minerals, and valuable B vitamins.
Kefir grains will ferment milk substitutes such as soy milk, rice milk, nut milks and coconut milk.
(You can find this on my products page at Mother Nature.)
- Eating Raw Foods - Eating more raw foods strengthens your digestive system. Raw foods still contain natural enzymes that helps to digest them so your body has less work to do. Raw foods contain easily absorbed vitamins and minerals, and generally make the body more alkali and less acidic, strengthening the immune system. Many people report more energy, strength, endurance, emotional balance and mental clarity on a raw food diet. Some even claim raw dieting has restored their health after debilitating or "terminal" illnesses.
- Eliminate refined and processed foods! Our bodies were not designed genetically or physiologically equipped to metabolize the mass amount of refined food, which is stripped of any nutritional value, found in the typical diet of this day and age.
This creates a continuous strain and abuse on the bodys' organs, such as the pancreas, the liver, the adrenals and other endocrine glands. The continuous ingestion of empty refined foods leads to malfunctioning of the glandular and metabolic systems.

The Domestication of Animals
Diseases connected to the domestication of animals
“Most and probably all of the distinctive infectious diseases of civilization have been transferred to human populations from animal herds.”
—William H. McNeill, Plagues and Peoples
"Domestication" is a process that takes place with an entire animal species over many generations.
Domesticated animals are not just tamer than their wild ancestors; they are different genetically. Over the ages, desirable qualities, such as size and disposition, were engrained by breeding only those animals that displayed them. This explains some of the physical differences between wild and domesticated animals. For example, most domesticated species are smaller and fatter and have smaller teeth and brains than their wild ancestors.
The domestication of animals triggered what the director of Harvard’s Center for Health and the Global Environment called the mass “spillover” of animal disease into human populations. Epidemic diseases tend to be harbored only by those animal species that herd or flock together in large numbers. This concentration allows for the evolution and maintenance of contagious pathogens capable of rapidly spreading through entire populations.
Our increasing interdependence with animals and their products may well be the single most critical risk factor to our own health and well-being with regard
to infectious diseases. Microbes causing diseases such as measles, smallpox, influenza, and tuberculosis likely evolved from animal diseases as a result of the advent of the domestication of animals approximately 8-10,000 years ago.
When the world warmed up after the last Ice Age (i.e., about 10,000 years ago), human ancestors discovered how to domesticate animals for food, milk, and clothing, etc. Microorganisms that had previously affected only animals to evolve into human pathogens, aided by the increasingly close and frequent contacts between humans and their domesticated animals. In this way some bacteria and viruses became human pathogens for the first time. This probably was how measles, smallpox, influenza, and tuberculosis originated as contagious human diseases..........
measles and tuberculosis from cattle; smallpox from cattle or other livestock with related pox viruses; flu from pigs and ducks; and whooping cough from dogs, and AIDS from monkeys (*see video below).
The current outbreak of swine flu illustrates the point that to regard the domestication of animals as natural requires us to maintain that it is in the nature of things for us to do something that, as an empirical matter, is harmful to our survival.
These pathogens developed and spread easily because the animals lived in herds or packs. When they were domesticated by the first farmers, the viruses were waiting to be passed on. These so-called "zoonotic" diseases are then transmitted more readily among humans because people themselves live in close proximity to one another.

Some animal were "failures" and humans were unsuccessful at domesticating them. The Zebra is one example, because of their "bad temper".
Elephants have historically been used as work animals in some parts of the world, but they grow too slowly to become truly domesticated animals.
Grizzly bears, African buffalo were unsuccessful because of their "unpredictable disposition, and Deer and Antelope because they can not be penned up or herded.
Today, eleven thousand years after the first domestication of animals, human beings have become totally dependent on animals for their existence.
"Domestication" of animals means all of the following: "ownership", "human supremacy, "abuse", "oppression", "exploitation", "confinement", "enslavement", "the adaptation of an animal through breeding in captivity to a life intimately associated with and advantageous to humans", "selfishness", "greed", "domination".
However, although God gave man dominion over the earth, the true meaning of dominion is not domination and use, but care and cultivation! The human race is to be in charge of the stewardship of the earth and to nurture it, not dominate and exploit it for selfish motives. Because all of creation is made by God, we are called, as creatures who are able to co-create with God, to do all we can to care for and preserve the goodness inherent in ALL species.
We have become so disconnected from other life on our planet because we fail to see animals as part of the web of life........instead we exploit all species for the benefit of one.
I guess you could sum up the domestication of animals this way:
"Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife--birds, kangaroos, deer,
all kinds of cats, coyotes, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes--by the million
in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic
animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the million,
because eating all those animals leads to degenerative--and fatal--health
conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures
and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere,
millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition
because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile,
some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so
easily and so violently, and once a year sends out cards praying for Peace on
Earth." ---C. David Coats

Think Before You Eat!
On any given night of the week, we are bombarded with commercials advertising the biggest, best, tastiest steaks burgers and chicken. It's one fast food restaurant commercial after another perpetuating the ongoing brainwashing and conditioning since our childhoods, that meat is something our bodies need and is good for our health! I find it amusing, that in between the onslaught of fast food commercials we are also bombarded with commercials advertising unending medications for every possible ailment>>>>>acid reflux, upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, high cholesterol, weight loss, osteoporosis, allergies, sinus problems, insomnia, impotence, heart problems, stroke, cancer, depression, mental disorders, acne, arthritis, bad breath>>>>>and the list goes on and on! Most people fail to see the correlation between treating their body like a garbage dump with the way we eat, and developing illness and disease. They also do not realize that "Big Business" is behind all of this. I can think of several meat/dairy campaigns of recent: "Beef, it's what's for dinner"; "Pork, the other white meat"; "Got Milk?"; "Milk, it does a body good". We must stop and realize that the Meat and Dairy Industries are behind all of this advertising (brain washing). Our food supply is controlled by our government and big corporations whose primary concern is NOT our health, but rather their GREED. Part of all this greed are the Pharmaceutical companies who are pushing the mulititude of drugs that they convince us that we need to fix all the problems we've developed from consuming meat and dairy products. They all work together, supporting each other, in getting richer and destroying our health.
Think before you eat! We are stuffing ourselves with disease producing foods and then wondering why we have all the health problems we do. It starts out with a slight pain that develops into a reoccuring pain, which develops into an illness and eventually a disease. Pain is Mother Nature's way of warning us there is a problem. We are not in harmony with nature. We are not eating as God intended us to. Instead of finding the source of the pain, and addressing that, we look for "quick fixes" like a pill we can pop instead of finding the source of the problem...which can usually be traced back to diet. We are what we eat! Meat, dairy products, other animal by-products are all contaminated with poisonous diseases, antibiotics, hormones, bacteria, DDT and medicinal drugs. Along with meat, it's all the processed and artificial foods/drinks, artificial colorings, sweetners, flavoring, preservatives, sugar, white flour, microwaved food, etc, we eat that also contributes to our poor health and illnesses. I am concentrating on meat in the diet here, though. These are the reasons why meat significantly contributes to almost all chronic or degenerative diseases that cripple our health and shorten our lifespan.
- It is very high in fat, especially saturated fat -
No matter how you slice it, meat is high in fat.
Even the lean parts are laced with fat.
Not only is there too much fat in meat, it's the wrong kind. Nearly half the fat in meat is the artery-clogging, saturated type. Meat has a double fault. It's high in fat and contains no fiber, so it takes longer to empty from the stomach and pass through the intestines.
- It increases blook cholesterol levels -
Meats contain high levels of the amino acid L-lysine, which increases insulin production, prompting the liver to release fat and cholesterol into the bloodstream. Plant proteins, especially soy, decrease cholesterol levels.
- It is very dense in calories -
Meat contains so much fat, and the fat is the most calorie-dense nutrient. It is a substance that if eaten regularly or in excess can easily lead to weight gain.
- It increases chances of colon cancer-
Carcinogenic compounds, called 'heterocyclic amines' are produced when animal flesh is cooked, especially at high temperatures. HCAs form when amino acids and creatine (a chemical found in muscles) react at high cooking temperatures. This along with the fact that meat does not clear from the intestines quickly since meat is high in protein and protein takes a very long time to get fully digested, allows any carcinogenic compounds to do the most damage to the lining of the intestinal walls.
- It depletes our body of enzymes-
Cooked meat has no enzymes to help with the digestion of the meat. When you consume meat, your digestive system works extra hard to try to digest it. When the system lacks the required enzymes to do its work, it engages enzymes from other parts of the body to help out. This quickly depletes the body's natural enzymes, causing a constant enzymes-deficient situation.
- It is hard on the digestive system -
Meat is protein-dense animal muscle, and, in comparison to many other foods, for optimal digestion it requires better chewing, more acid secretion by the stomach's parietal cells, and more active enzyme secretion by the pancreas. Meat can cause a lot of digestive disturbances for the very same reasons.
- It carries the highest risk of bacterial contamination - Meat begins to putrify immediately after the animal has been killed. During the long time it takes to digetst in the body, it putrefies. Putrefaction produces toxins and amines that accumulate in the liver, kidneys and large intestines, destroys bacterial cultures and causes degeneration of the lining of the small intestine. Putrefied meat eventually adheres to the lining of your intestines, where it often causes various digestive problems such as IBS, stomach cramps, prolapsed colons, haemorrhoids, constipation and many other problems that are not even directly linked to the intestines.
- It increases chances of autoimmune diseases -
Autoimmune diseases are a large group of diseases in which the immune system turns against the body's own cells, tissues and organs, leading to chronic and often deadly conditions. Examples include multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, Bright's disease and diabetes. Due to the fact that some animal proteins are very closely related to ours, the body responds to a lot of these as foreign particles and tries to destroy them. When the body does this on a regular basis, after some time it begins to turn on itself due to some auto-immune processes that end up resulting in things like arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis and others.
- It contains synthetic hormones, which disturb our hormonal balance -
Farm animals are injected with large amounts of hormones to increase the animals growth, to increase milk production and to make the meat tender. Hormone residues in beef have been implicated in the early onset of puberty in girls, which could put them at greater risk of developing breast and other forms of cancer. Kids’ bodies are small and still developing, so exposure to even tiny amounts of the hormones in animal products on a regular basis can have a large impact. When kids eat the flesh of cows who were treated with hormones, the spike in hormone levels can disrupt the development of their brain and sex organs. These hormones which are estrogen-dominant, have been found to be linked to breast cancer, fibroids, ovarian and cervical cancer, and endometriosis in women. In men, the common symptoms are prostate and testicular cancer, loss of libido, impotence and breast enlargement, just to name a few.
- It contains various drugs -
Meat contains many dangerous chemical substances such as: carcinogenic growth hormones, DDT, preservatives, tranquilizers, hormones and other drugs fed to animals, arsenic, sodium sulphate and numerous other chemical compound used in livestock farming. The fact that farm animals are given antibiotics regularly has contributed to the current antibiotic resistance, where the antibiotics that we may need at a point in our lives, no longer work because the bacteria have gotten so much experience with them in small doses to mutate against them.
- It contains chemicals-
Artificial fertilizers provide no nutrient to plants, hence, no nutrient to the animals that eat them. On top of that, pesticides when ingested by the animals, are accumulated in huge amounts in their bodies, which is then passed on to humans. These chemicals are so deadly that research has linked them to birth defects in newborns, neurological disorders, various chronic diseases, serious liver disease and cancer.
- It contains its own diseases
Farm animals are raises in deplorable conditions and despite the large scale usage of antibiotics, the diseases cannot be controlled. We may be eating diseased animals and be unaware of it, especially if you don't clean the meat and cook it yourself.
All across the nation, animals too sick or weak even to stand are being marketed and slaughtered for human food. These so-called "downed animals" suffer horribly, and the circulation of meat from them into our food supply poses a serious threat to human health.
- Meat from animals raised under stressful conditions has a negatively altered biochemistry, that negatively alters ours -
The number one thing that happens to all animals under stress is an elevation of stress hormones, which initialize a whole slew of other biochemical reactions
Animals get frightened during slaughter, causing their body to turn rigid from adrenaline flow that creates body toxins. Other toxic by-products like uric acid and wastes are also present in the blood and tissues. These all add up to become poison when meat is consumed.
Our bodies have the power to prevent and heal ourselves through our diet. Eating a healthy, balanced, vegan diet has shown to prevent a number of diseases, such as: cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, prostate cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, macular degenerative disease, cataracts, arthritis and osterporosis.
The world's most important health advisory bodies are now in complete agreement - a vegetarian diet is one of the healthiest possible.........and the closer it is to being vegan the healthier it is! The British Medical Association, The World Health Organization, The China Study, The Oxford Study, Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicnine, The American Heart Association and The American Dietetic Association all have conducted numerous studies and research that concludes a vegan diet is what we all should strive for for optimum health.

They Feed Factory Farm Animlas What???
Our society is showered with images of happy animals living on farms where the cows graze in lush green fields (those "Happy Cow commercials make me sick!) and the chickens have the run of the barnyard. This vision of free-roaming animals living out their days in sunny fields is very far from the reality. A majority of the animals that are raised for food live miserable lives in intensive confinement in dark, overcrowded facilities, commonly called "factory farms." Factory farming evolved in the early 1920's when both vitamin A and D were discovered. With their discovery, these vitamins could now be added to feed and the animals no longer needed exercise or sunlight for proper growth and health. Now large numbers of animals could be raised indoors, yearround.
In their book "Poisons in Your Body", by Gary and Steven Null give us an inside look at the latest gimmicks used in the corporate-owned animal factories. "The animals are kept alive and fattened by the continuous administration of tranquilizers, hormones, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, and 2,700 other drugs," they write. "The process starts even before birth and continues long after death. Although these drugs will still be present in the meat when you eat it, the law does not require that they be listed on the package."
To prevent the spread of disease that is rampant among confined livestock, animals on factory farms are fed feed that is pumped full of antibiotics. Because the act of treating only the infected animals would be to costly and time consuming, even healthy animals are given high doses of these drugs. Feeding the antibiotics to all the heard is more logical and less time consuming. Along with all the chemicals put directly into their food, insecticides are also highly used. The foods fed to the animals contain insecticides, along with the animals themselves, which are soaked in insecticides! Covering the animals with insecticides protects them against insects such as grubs, however the insecticides are also absorbed into the animal and then into the food eaten buy humans.
And then there are the chemicals added to meat. As soon as an animal is slaughtered, its flesh begins to putrefy, and after several days it turns a sickly gray-green. The meat industry masks this discoloration by adding nitrites, nitrates, and other preservatives to give the meat a bright red color. But research has now shown many of these preservatives to be carcinogenic.
Just as other factories try to cut costs, "animal factories" are constantly searching for ways to trim their costs. To save money, they've redefined what constitutes animal feed, with little consideration of what is best for the animals or for human health.....and they are fed foods that they are not designed to eat, or that are not even "food".
Factory farm animals are also routinely given antibiotics and growth hormones to increase milk production and cause the animals to gain weight faster, thus going to slaughter sooner.....and making for a more profitable operation. Overuse of antibiotics in general in farm animals is causing more strains of drug-resistant bacteria, which is affecting the treatment of various life-threatening diseases in humans.
Besides all the chemicals and drugs being fed to factory farmed animals, look at what else they are fed
(its disgusting!):
- Same species meat - The factory farming industry is turning farm animals into cannibals. Scientific research has linked this practice to the spread of both mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE) and avian bird flu.
Pig carcasses can be rendered and fed back to pigs, chicken carcasses can be rendered and fed back to chickens, and turkey carcasses can be rendered and fed back to turkeys. Even cattle can still be fed cow blood and some other cow parts.
- Diseased animals - Animal feed legally can contain rendered road kill, dead horses, and euthanized cats and dogs.
- Animal By-Products - Rendered feathers, hair, skin, hooves, blood, beaks, bones, intestines and internal organs can also be found in feed, often under catch-all categories like "animal protein products."
- Manure and other animal wastes - This can include cattle manure, swine waste, and poultry waste. It can also contain wood, sand, rocks, dirt, sawdust and other non-food substances.
- Garbage can legally be fed to pigs, and if this garbage includes uncooked meat, pigs are at risk for diseases such as hog cholera, Foot and Mouth Disease, African swine fever, and swine vesicular disease.
- Plastics - For the many animals whose digestive systems still need roughage to move food through, these factories have turned to the use of plastic pellets instead of plant-based roughage to compensate for a lack of natural fiber in the feed.
- Unhealthy amounts of grains - Abnormally high amounts can make the animals sick, especially natural grass eaters like cattle. Their bodies are not designed to handle a corn-rich and soy-rich diet; as a result, these animals can form liver abscesses, excessively acidic digestive systems (which require yet more drugs) and even sudden death.
The diet of a cow on a factory farm consists mainly of corn, which they must be "taught" to eat. Cows are natural grass eaters.......but because time is money for the factory farmer, a cow that used to grow for four or five years before slaughter is now slaughtered at 11 months. So we take them off their natural diet of grass and force them to eat corn and the problems these cows endure because of it are disturbing to say the least.
Cows can not digest corn. "Bloat" is a serious problem at feedlots...........as is "acidosis" which ulcerates the rumen, bacteria escape from the rumen into the blood stream, and end up in the liver, creating liver abscesses.
Cows have a special type of stomach called a "rumen", which is home to billions of microbes which can eat grass and hay. These bacteria, fungi and protists provide nutrients that the cow can digest. Without these microbes, the cow would die. Cows on their natural grass diet, chew the cud and burp a lot, but when you feed them corn, a layer of slime forms over the rumen which keeps the gas from escaping. It expands like a balloon and presses against the heart and lungs and if nothing is done about it, the cow will suffocate.
Most cows are also prone to having their livers damaged (abscessed) on a corn diet, but because cow liver is not eaten too much any more, farmers don't care if the cow's liver is abscessed. Up to 30% of cows going to slaughter are afflicted with this! These sick cows are pumped with anitbiotics to try to combat the sickness, but the fact of the matter is, if cows were to live any longer than they do today in factory farms, the diet they are fed would eventually blow out their livers!
The diet of veal calves
Veal Calves are "byproducts" of the dairy industry and are generally taken away from the mother when they are born (which greatly distresses both the calf and the mother) They are then put into extremely tiny crates in complete darkness. In these crates they will stay till the last day of their life, which is about four months after birth, when they are brought to the slaughterhouse. The calves are fed a (low in iron) liquid diet with little nutritive value so the flesh of the veal is white. Because of lack of nutrition, lack of space calves, and complete boredom, these calves get ill and frequently suffer from anemia, diarrhea and pneumonia.
A diet of a hog consists mainly of corn and soy, because they are cheap crops. The natural diet of a hog is grass, legumes, standing crops, or any other ground cover, turnips, kale and fodder beets. They are naturally social animals and factory farms ignore their needs for space, social interaction at feeding time, and the quality nutrients that the pasture can provide. They are confined to very small pens where they can't even more, thus unable to forage or root, two of their natural behaviors.
In many states, garbage is fed to hogs, and it may contain uncooked meat and treated animal wastes, putting pigs are at risk for diseases such as Hog Cholera, Foot and Mouth Disease, African Swine Fever, and Swine Vesicular Disease.
Arsenic-based feed additives are also given to pigs in order to increase their weight quickly.
Hogs become aggressive in tight spaces and often bite each other's tails, which has caused most farmers to cut the tails off without any pain relief. Hogs live on
grated metal floors which allow for easy removal of manure, but because they are unnatural surfaces for pigs, the animals often suffer skeletal deformities. Ammonia and other gases from manure irritate animals' lungs, to the point where over 80% of US pigs have pneumonia upon slaughter. Pigs in factory farms are slaughtered within five to six months of birth; left to their own accord they could live fifteen years.
The diet of chickens and turkeys
Chickens today are bred to have extra large breasts
genetically manipulated to grow much quicker and larger than their ancestors. They now grow so rapidly that the heart and lungs are not developed well enough to support the remainder of the body, resulting in congestive heart failure and tremendous death losses. Modern broiler chickens also experience crippling leg disorders and lameness, as their legs are not capable of supporting their abnormally heavy bodies, which are top heavy.
A chicken's natural behavior includes living in stable groups of 30 or so that employ a social hierarchy (the origin of the term pecking order). The chickens in a given flock all know and recognize each other. Their communal activities include scratching and pecking for food, running around, taking dust baths, and resting. They crow and chirp in a range of some 30 meaningful vocalizations. Chickens also have a strong urge to nest, and, like most animal mothers, they nurture their young attentively and affectionately.
Chickens are either bred for meat ("broilers") or for eggs ("layers"). They are routinely de-beaked and have their toes cut off, to keep them from attacking each other since they are in such tight confinement. They can not even spread their wings. The lifespan of chickens naturally is seven years, but for male chicks of egg producing hens their lifespan is not even one day. They are crushed to death and usually fed back to their sisters, because only hens lay eggs, and consumers don't like their taste. Broiler chickens only live to be six weeks old on factory farms before they are shipped to slaughter.
Factory farm poultry are fed with slaughterhouse leftovers, which contains animal byproducts such as bone, feathers, blood, manure and animal parts, mixed with grain. They are also fed manure in some cases, which may contain pesticides, drug residues, pathogens, heavy metals, hormones and microbial toxins. Some of the antimicrobials used to control parasites and promote growth in poultry contain arsenic, a known human carcinogen that ends up in the meat of the chicken. Some of the arsenic compound is excreted in the chickens’ faeces (which is treated and fed to cows) but some is retained in the chickens' liver. Chicken meat in the US contains three to four times as much arsenic as other types of meat.
Colorants may also be added to the feed of chickens in order to brighten the color of egg yolks and chicken flesh.

Vegan Diet and Aging.
It is no secret that vegetables are good for you, but recent research by scientists at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center suggests that their benefits may extend into old age, helping slow mental decline and keeping the brain young. Researchers examined the association between rates of cognitive change and dietary consumption of fruits and vegetables among 3,718 participants, aged 65 years and older. Those who consumed greater than 2.8 servings of vegetables per day had significantly slower rates of mental decline than those who ate fewer servings. Green leafy vegetables, in particular, were most strongly associated with a decreased rate of mental decline.
Recent studies link Alzheimer’s, too with an animal based diet. Research reveals that meat eaters are more than twice as likely to develop senile dementia than their vegetarian counterparts. A vegan diet is believed to help slow the aging process.
(see: http://www.sharan-india.org/1/5/)
"There's no question about it. A plant-based diet is the optimum diet for longevity, disease prevention and peak cognitive function," said Mike Adams, a holistic nutritionist and author of "The Seven Laws of Nutrition." "At the same time, diets high in the consumption of meat and animal products, including dairy, slow the brain while accelerating aging. If you want to live a long, healthy, disease free life, get your nutrition from plants and superfoods." Read more about Mike Adams at
http://www.creationsmagazine.com/articles/C116/Adams.html
Check out the bio of Dr. Jameth Sheridan, ND at
http://www.rawfoodresearch.com/jamethsheridanbio.html He says after 13 years of constant research and experimentation, he has concluded that the optimum diet is a whole foods, plant based vegan, organic diet with most or all of the foods being eaten raw, and the focus being on vegetables.
A healthyVegan diet contains absolutely no cholesterol and produces significantly less free radicals in general (these are both risk factors for heart disease and other diseases). Many anti-aging doctors suggest a completely vegan diet, consisting of: raw nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables, seaweed, barley greens, olive oil and
berries (to name a few anti-aging foods).
Animal proteins are particularly acid forming and contribute to osteoporosis, arthritis, gout, kidney problems, cancers and aging in general.
A few statistics:
- Vegans have a 57% reduction in getting heart disease.
- Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure.
- Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes.
- Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population.
- Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones.
- Osteoporosis is due to calcium loss from bones, and is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine.
- Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating.
- Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians.
- Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases.
- Cataracts and macular degenerative disease can be headed off with a vegan diet.
- A vegan diet can prevent and can improve the health of those suffering with arthritis.
- On average, those consuming a vegan diet live 6+ years longer.

Raw Food Diet and Digestive Enzymes
Enzymes help us digest our food. Enzymes are proteins though, and once they are heated much above 116 degrees F, this structure will change.
They are no longer able to provide the function for which they were designed. Cooked foods contribute to chronic illness, because their enzyme content is damaged and thus requires us to use valuable metabolic enzymes in order to help digest your food.
Digestion of cooked food demands much more energy than the digestion of raw food. Raw food is so much more easily digested that it passes through the digestive tract in 1/2 to 1/3 of the time it takes for cooked food. Cooking food destroys valuable nutrients. Countless studies have revealed that cooking food produces toxic by-products, and once consumed, the body reacts by generating white blood cells to attack the foreign debris.
Types of Enzymes
- Digestive Enzymes - are made within the body. They are secreted by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and the small intestine help break down food into simple components.
- Food Enzymes - exist naturally in raw foods. If the food is cooked above 116 degrees F, the high temperature involved in the cooking process destroys the enzymes. Digestive enzymes and food enzymes serve the same function; they digest the food so it can be absorbed into the blood stream.
- Metabolic Enzymes - are produced in the cells and are found throughout the body in the organs, in the bones, the blood, and inside the cells themselves. Metabolic enzymes help run the heart, brain, lungs, and kidneys.
The raw food diet consists primarily of plant foods including fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, seaweed, and dried fruit. While all raw foods contain enzymes, the most powerful enzyme-rich food is sprouted seeds, grains, and legumes. Sprouting increases the enzyme content in these foods enormously.
You should consume at least 50% of your food as uncooked. The more the better though.
If you do cook your food, the best way to cook food is to lightly steam, stew, or use a slow crock cooker.
If you do any reading on the subject of "raw/living foods and enzymes" you will find plenty opposition, just as you will for a vegan diet.......moreso for the raw diet I think though. I will say that I do eat about 75% raw, and I have never used a dehydrator, a juicer, or any other fancy tools for preparing my food. I do love steamed vegetables, baked yams, and roasted vegetables, so I could never do 100% raw. I eat a lot of whole raw food though. My diet consists of lots of raw vegatables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, and I do drink rice protein smoothies twice a day, to which I add flax seeds and flax oil, and fruit. I eat nothing processed, nothing from a can, no junk food, nothing artificial. I have no desire to either. I have been eating this way for so many years now and I will say to all those who oppose the raw diet, I am never sick. I have tons of envegy. I'm almost 50 and I not only wear the same size I did at 18, I also have the same energy level. So, there must be something to say for a raw diet!
If you would like to learn more about a raw vegan diet, check out my products page. I represent RAW FOOD WORLD and also SUNFOOD NUTRITION, RAW GURU, THE RAW BAKERY and RAW POWER, that all offer information, books, tons of products, etc, that you will need to get started.

A Raw Vegan Diet and Dental Health
A 1933 paper by E. B. Forbes says that "...cooking renders food pasty, so that it sticks to the teeth, and undergoes acid fermentation.
Seems that having a natural raw vegan diet not only helps our physical health and our mental health, but it also plays a role in good dental health.
Eating fiber-rich raw foods massage the gums and clean the teeth. Eating raw foods also increases salivation, which neutralizes acids and alkalis within the mouth Raw foods keep teeth and gums clean due to high water content, and prevent the build up of plaque.
Although oral hygiene is of great importance in treating and preventing periodontal disease, it is not sufficient in most cases. In addition to proper dental care, good nutrition and immune system health are very important to prevent gum disease and tooth lose.
There is a relationship between nutrition and dental health says Dr. Weston Price, DDS., who traveled throughout the world to study the effect of various diets on dental health and tooth decay.
He found, without exception, that the people who ate diets free of refined and processed foods were almost completely free of tooth decay.
His concluded that rough, unrefined, whole, unprocessed, and untampered foods promote the highest degree of dental health. Without exception, the eating of modern foods produces dental deterioration.
A diet of chiefly raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains and fiber can make your present teeth last longer. People who have followed a vegan diet over a 20 year period show less bone loss then those who ate meat! Include Vitamin C and Calcium (from vegetable sources such as broccoli, bok choy, kale, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, spinach, artichokes, beans, sesame seeds, papaya, soy nuts, alomonds and sunflower seeds.) to prevent gum disease and periodontal disease. Try to eliminate or use sparingly, coffee, tea and soft drinks as they rob the body of calcium. Vitamins C is very important
for the production of collagen, the basic protein building block for the fibrous framework of all the tissues, including gums. Vitamin C strengthens weak gum tissue and makes the gum lining more resistant to penetration by bacteria. Good sources are orange juice are citrus fruits, tomatoes, red peppers and broccoli. Vitamins D and B are also needed to boost the body's natural ability to fight off periodontal disease. B vitamins are found in green leafy vegetables, avocados, bananas and brewer's yeast, while vitamin D is produced by the body through sunlight and also found in fortified foods or can be taken by supplement.

Can a Raw Vegan Diet Assist in Preventing/Curing Cancer?
I dont' think I'd be exaggerating to say that everyone reading this knows someone who is presently living with or has dealt with cancer. Both my parents have gone through quite a bit over the past 10 years, and although neither is vegan or vegetarian, I know that they have seriously altered their diets to boost their immune systems, with healthier eating and supplements to fight this disease.
Raw foodists, and advocates of a mostly raw diet, including medical doctors who believe that we should eat as much raw as possible, believe that the standard American Diet (SAD) greatly interferes with immune system function. SAD places a huge burden on the digestive system. In turn, the digestive system, in order to do its job, drains energy from the immune system.
Although cancer is increasing at an alarming rate, it some cases it can be prevented, by keeping our body’s immune system up. Much poisoning of the body has been caused by the use of such foods as: meat, dairy products, white sugar, white flour, white rice, along with the use of liquor, tobacco, coffee, soda and all other denatured foods. Good wholesome food builds good blood, where as unwholesome foods builds a poor quality of blood. Cancer will not develop where there is a pure blood stream and the body’s immune system is functioning at its optimum.
Here are some facts about cancer:
- Every person has cancer cells in their body! In some of us, they may remain dormant. In many they will not. When a doctor tells a patient they have detected cancer, it means that these cancer cells have multiplied to a few billion, and can be detected by standard tests.
- When a person has cancer, it means that they have multiple nutritional deficiencies in their body, which could be due to genetic, environmental, lifestyle
and food factors.
- An effective way to battle cancer is to not feed it the foods it needs to survive and multiply: Meat, which provided an acidic environment and helps cancer cells thrive.......Milk and Dairy Products, which causes the body to produce mucous, especially in the gastrointestinal tract, and helps cancer cells to thrive as well..........Sugar, which supplies food to cancer cells (and sugar substitutes are just as harmful, so stay away from them as well.)
- A diet made of totally fresh vegetables, juices, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains and seeds, and fruits provides an alkaline environment. This will provide healhy cells with the nourishment they need to grow. Raw food is live food and possesses the highest nutritive value. It is full of vitamins, mineral, enzymes, phytochemicals, etc.
- Supplements can help build up the immune system, such as Vitamin C with bioflavanoids, Magnesium, Calcium, Flaxseed Oil, Selenium, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A, Zinc and CoEnzyme Q10.
- Many believe this fact is known to the Cancer society, but the public was never informed. Everything today is drugs, drugs, drugs. We are bombarded with drug commercials daily........doctors write out prescriptions without ever researching our nutritional deficiences and the role they play in desease. Many believe that cancer drugs, chemotherapy and radiation, are not only harmful but merely band-aids that bring billions and billions of dollars to their manufacturers.
After cancer is discovered, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are usually prescribed as part of the treatment. The purpose of these treatments is to destroy the cancer cells, and thousands of cancer patients can agree firsthand to the negative effects of chemotherapy and radiation on the body's immune system. Boosting the immune system is not considered a primary strategy of medical practitioners in the U.S.
There are certain signs that occur that indicate the body's immune system needs a boost because it is suppressed or depressed: constant fatigue, low levels of white blood cells, cuts and wounds don't heal quickly, a cold or the flu lingers for weeks and complications develop, frequency of colds or the flu has increased.
A raw vegan diet cleanses, detoxifies and heals the body on every level. Some of the benefits include the shrinking of tumors, normalization of blood pressure, and the healing of cancer, heart disease, and other serious diseases. It can restore and maintain optimum health and this lifestyle is a great preventive for future medical problems.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Gillian McKeith and Professor T. Colin Campbell (author of the China project) advocate diets high in raw, vegan, unprocessed foods.

Can a Vegan Diet Make Us More Peaceful?
"It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living by its purely physical effect on the human temperament would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind." - Albert Einstein Letter to 'Vegetarian Watch-Tower', 27 December 1930
Every vitamin, every mineral and every food has a distinct and specific effect on our bodies and consequently on our mental function, and at a subtler level, on our attitudes. The brain is our most sensitive organ and it quickly reacts to poor nutrition and toxins in the body. Therefore, human behaviour is easily influenced and affected by improper nutrition and toxins and can be seen as aggressiveness, violence, negative attitudes and an absence of kindness and compassion.
We have become a much more violent society and many believe it has to do more with our poor diets than it does to violent video games and tv programs.
Our diets have progressively become worse, relying on fast foods, high quanties of sugar-laden foods, meat and meat products that contain high amounts of pesticides, steroids, hormones, antibioltics, and many other toxic chemicals.
Many violent acts can be attributed to mood swings and the major causes of mood swings in human beings are food allergies, food additives, high levels of heavy metals, excessive sugar, toxins (from meat), deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. These mood swings can lead to depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ADD, anxieity, etc.........and these disroders can lead to violent behavior.
A person who ingests meat and meat products, dairy foods, refined sugars, processed foods, cooked fats and fast foods has an Acid PH level. All of these foods are hard for the body to digest and the result is high level of toxins in the blood. A person who eats a vegan diet, one full of raw foods and one that is alkaline, is usually calmer, less aggressive, peaceful, thinking on a higher level of consciouseness.
Those who choose to eat a plant-based diet, and NOT to kill another living creature for survival, are less likely to commit a violent act against another human being. Meat eating contributes to a mentality of violence. Even though individuals are not killing their own meat, they are allowing someone else to do the "dirty work" for them. Everyone who eats meat is participating in the cruelty and murder of billions of animals each year. When, as vegans, we choose NOT to participate in that, we are making a conscious decision to live a more peaceful, positive life, starting with what we put in our bodies, and this leads to a healthy emotional state.
When you eat the flesh of animals, that in itself is not easily digested by the body......you are eating dangerous chemicals which are given to animals destined for the slaughterhouse. These include penicillin, tetracycline, sewage-sludge pellets decontaminated with cesium-137, radioactive nuclear waste, fattening agents, growth-promoting hormones, appetite stimulants, steroids, and a number of other chemicals and antibiotics are administered to prepare the animal for sale. Plus, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers also collect in the animlas tissues and milk. (These animals are nothing more than a food-producing machines and they need to reach optimum killing weight in 15 to 20 months.) In addition to this, some animal meat is dipped in sodium sulphite to decrease the stench of decay and to turn its gray color cherry red! SO, besides eating the flesh of living creatures, meat-eaters are eating a vast array of toxic chemicals as well, which all contribute to a lack of mental well-being and good mental health.
The growing level of crimes can not just be seen as a result of mass media influence and decline of social morality. More and more physicians, biologists and psychiatrists agree that the social roots of violence are found in the diet. Many mental and emotional problems, such as manic depression (bipolar disorder), schizophrenia and some apparently psychotic disorders have been associated with dietary intake and responded favorably to dietary intervention with a plant based diet. Food that robs us of energy, such as heavy products that are hard on digestion, like meat, weigh us down emotionally, mentally and physically, even if we do not realize this immediately.
